Becoming a Copywriter With No Experience
What exactly does a copywriter do? Copywriters are responsible for the content on websites, brochures, and other marketing materials. To work as a copywriter, you must have prior experience creating content; however, there are ways to become a copywriter without prior experience, as well as many freelance copywriting jobs online that you can apply to right now.
What is copywriting?
Copywriting is the art and science of creating persuasive sales copy. And, contrary to popular belief, no prior experience is required to get started. In fact, becoming a copywriter is one of the most straightforward routes into the advertising industry. All you really need are some fundamental grammar skills and a keen eye for words. You should also have a good understanding of your target audience and what they want or need in their daily lives or careers.
Why people hire freelancers?
People hire freelancers for a variety of reasons. They may require assistance with a one-time project, or they may wish to outsource tasks for which they do not have time. Businesses may hire freelancers when they require specialized skills that their in-house team lacks. In other cases, businesses simply do not have the resources to hire full-time employees.
How to land freelance jobs?
- Start by reading blogs and articles about copywriting. This will give you a feel for the style and voice that copywriters use.
- Next, create your own portfolio. You can do this by starting a blog and writing samples of your work. Be sure to include a mix of both long- and short-form content.
- Once you have a portfolio, reach out to businesses and offer your services as a freelance copywriter. Be sure to emphasize your lack of experience as an asset, not a liability.
The first writing job
The first writing job you'll need to get started in copywriting is known as a spec job. A spec job is one in which you write an advertisement or commercial entirely on spec, or for free. The goal is to demonstrate your abilities to the company and get your foot in the door. Spec jobs can be found by searching online or in print publications. When you've found one that appears to be a good fit, pitch yourself to the company. Send them your resume and any relevant work samples so they know what you have to offer. Include any examples of successful ads that use language that is similar to what they are looking for. That way they know that even if this ad doesn't end up working out, they know who to call next time around.
From there, it’s only up!
If you don’t have any experience as a copywriter, don’t worry! You can still become one. Here are a few steps to get you started:
- Do some research and find out what copywriting is all about. What does a copywriter do? What skills do you need?
- Take some online courses or read some books on copywriting. This will help you learn the basics and get an idea of what it’s all about.
- Start practicing! Write some sample pieces and get feedback from friends or family.
- Once you feel confident enough, start applying for jobs or internships.
